Missouri Head Injury Statistics/Reports
Comparing National and State Traumatic Brain Injury Data
TBI National Statistics (.xls) - TBI State Statistics (.xls)
The following reports can be accessed on the Missouri Head Injury Advisory Council website:
- Traumatic Brain Injury Needs Assessment
- Public Health Burden of Traumatic Brain Injury
- Traumatic Brain Injury Action Plan
Methods:
Data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) for the years 1995-2001 was used to calculate the average annual rates using the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) standard TBI case definition for:
- Emergency Department Visits: National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey
- Hospitalizations: National Hospital Discharge Survey
- Deaths: Multiple Cause-of Death Datasets
Similar data from Missouri was obtained for 2002 to show how national and state TBI data can be compared.
Challenges:
People seen by private doctors and those not seeking medical care are not included
Conclusion:
Missouri can benefit from comparing state TBI data with national data by identifying subgroups of the population with the highest rates of TBI, and determining the greatest need for prevention and/or services.
- Missouri's data shows a higher rate of Emergency Department visits than the national data for the age groups 15-19 and 20-24, suggesting that prevention activities and services are highly needed for these two age groups.
