Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is a cross-sectional telephone survey that generates U.S. and state-specific information about health risk behaviors, clinical preventive services, disease prevalence, health care access, quality of life, and other health-related issues. BRFSS data are collected through random-digit-dialed monthly telephone interviews with non-institutionalized, civilian, adults (18 years of age and older). The specific question used in the 2002 and 2005 surveys was “During the past 30 days, for about how many days did pain make it hard for you to do your usual activities, such as self-care, work, or recreation?” Response options included 1) the number of days, 2) none, 3) don’t know/not sure, or 4) refused.
