Data & Statistical Reports
Pregnancy Nutritional Surveillance System (PNSS)
An annual report is prepared by DHSS, generally within six months
after receipt of the summary tables from CDC. The annual report
summarizes the state data and compares it to the national data
on demographic characteristics of the population and prevalence
of anemia, prenatal care, pre-pregnancy weight status, weight gain
during pregnancy, smoking behaviors, drinking behaviors, birth
outcomes specifically low birth weight and premature births, and
infant feeding practices.
Clinic/county-specific graphic summaries of the demographic characteristics
of the population and prevalence of health indicators, prenatal
behaviors and birth outcomes are generated by the Department of
Health for use by the local WIC agencies. http://www.dhss.mo.gov/Nutrition_Pregnancy/Publications.html

The WIC MICAs data are acquired from the WIC Certification data
set. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants,
and Children (WIC) is a U.S. Department of Agriculture program,
which was authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1972. The main purposes
of the WIC Program are to provide food supplements, nutritional
risk assessments, nutrition education, and health and social services
referrals to low-to-moderate income pregnant and postpartum women,
infants, and children up to age five (Less than 185 percent of
the Federal Poverty Level). To find out more information on WIC
go to: www.dhss.mo.gov/wic/index.html.
The data utilized to develop the WIC MICAs is acquired differently
than that which is presented by CDC in the PNSS reports
so numbers and percents will not be the same.
