Action for Healthy Kids

American Academy of Pediatrics on Childhood Obesity

pdf file California Report On School Nutrition
This report, prepared by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, provides standards for competitive foods sold on school campuses addressing beverages, fat and saturated fat, sugar, portion sizes, and the availability of fruits and vegetables. The information was prepared in support of a state bill that was passed into law, which establishes nutritional standards for foods sold at elementary schools, limits availability of carbonated beverages in middle schools, and increases school meal reimbursements.

CANFit
The California Adolescent Nutrition and Fitness Program, a statewide, nonprofit organization, offers information on its campaign to help communities improve the nutrition and physical activity status of California's low-income African American, American Indian, Latino, and Asian/Pacific Islander youth 10-14 years old.

Child Overweight Algorithm
A chart to assess children with BMI greater than or equal to the 95th percentile is available at this site maintained by the Division of Nutritional Health and Services, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. On the chart are step-by-step instructions for assessing an overweight child and suggestions on actions to take.

National Network for Childcare - Nutrition
This site features papers on childhood nutrition, breastfeeding, food-related activities, meals and snacks, and food safety. Distance learning opportunities are also offered as well as the latest news related to childhood nutrition.

Overweight in Childhood and Adolescence
The Food and Nutrition Section of the American Public Health Association has developed a website on overweight in childhood. The website contains materials on the subject of overweight in childhood and adolescence that can be used by individuals, professionals and communities to promote awareness and education, improve public health practice, and strengthen public policy.

Promoting Better Health Through Physical Activity
This report, Promoting Better Health for Young People Through Physical Activity and Sports , was prepared by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Secretary of Education for the President. It is featured on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention site.
