Department of Health and Senior Services Can Help Provide Assistance to Caregivers

An official with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services today commended family caregivers in Missouri who provide loving support to aging parents and spouses, and children with disabilities.  David S. Durbin, Director of the Division of Senior Services and Regulation, said the department is committed to helping all elderly and adult disabled citizens remain independent and safe in their communities.

“The Section for Senior Services is the initial point of contact that caregivers can use to learn about the services we offer,” Durbin said referring to the department's toll-free information and referral number, 1-800-235-5503.  Durbin said the department can make referrals to service providers, and, based on financial circumstances, can arrange for services such as house cleaning, meal preparation, personal grooming and hygiene, respite care including adult day care to allow caregivers time for themselves, and counseling services, all of which can make the task easier for individuals caring for family members at home.

Durbin noted that November is National Family Caregivers Month.  According to the National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA), 26.6% of the adult population in the United States has provided care for a chronically ill, disabled or elderly family member or friend during the past year.

“People want to stay in a home setting as long as possible,” Durbin said, “We are here to assist relatives in caring for their loved ones at home.”  He added, “In addition to helping to provide such services in people's homes, the department's Family Care Safety Registry can provide background information to individuals who are hiring personal caregivers to work with their loved ones.”
