The following definitions relate to terms used in this MICA only. Differences in definition of terms between this MICA and CODES reports are address in "Variables and Issues Information."

Age Group |
Age at the time of crash. Age groupings were formed in a way that was believed to be the most useful. |

Alcohol Use |
Defined as a citation for alcohol use and based on the judgment of the investigating officer that alcohol use contributed to the crash. |
|
|
Belt Use |
Defined as use of safety belts, or safety belts used with shoulder belts. Non-use is defined as non-use of safety belts, lack of safety belts in the vehicle, or use of shoulder belts only. |

County |
County where the crash occurred |
|
|
Crash |
Used in place of more commonly-used term "accident." |
|
|
Crash Type (Defined to be mutually exclusive categories.) |

All Types |
Total of all crash types. |
|
|
Multivehicle Headon |
Vehicles collided and the point of initial impact was the front of the vehicle. |

Multiple Vehicle Other |
More than one vehicle was involved and it was not a head-on crash. |

Rollover |
The accident type was an overturn, or the first point of impact on the vehicle was the top of the vehicle. |
|
|
Single Vehicle- Fixed Object |
Only one vehicle was in the crash and it hit a fixed object. |
|
|
Single Vehicle Other |
Only one vehicle was in the crash and it was not a fixed-object crash. |
|
Driver Sex |
Defined as male or female. |
|
|
Ejection |
The driver was either partially or completely ejected from the vehicle. |
|
|
Head Injury |
Linked emergency room or inpatient record indicated the driver received a head injury according to the International Classification of Diseases 9th Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). ICD-9-CM codes used to define a head injury are E800-801, E80 3-804, and E850-854. |

Medical Treatment (Defined by the kind of record that was linked to the crash record.) |

Died |
Driver died in the hospital or outside of a hospital. |

Emergency Room |
The driver was treated in the emergency room, but was not admitted to the hospital and did not die. |

Speed Zone |
The speed limit posted for the location of the crash. |

Includes drivers of buses, motor homes, farm equipment and construction equipment. |

All Terrain Vehicles |
Includes drivers of all-terrain vehicles, including 3-5 wheel types. |
|
|
Bicycles |
Includes drivers of bicycles. |
|
|
Big Trucks |
Includes drivers of single unit and tractor-trailer trucks. |
|
|
Cars |
Includes drivers of cars, station wagons, sport utility vehicles and vans. |
|
|
Cycles, Bikes-ATVs |
Combination of the three categories "Motorcycle, "Bicycles" and "All Terrain Vehicles." |

Motorcycle |
Includes drivers of mopeds as well as drivers of motorcycles that have two or more wheels. |

Pickup Trucks |
Includes drivers of pick-up trucks. |
