Conducting a Needs Assessment

One of the first steps in these program planning models is to conduct a needs assessment. The MICA system provides many tools for assisting you and your partners in this process.

  • See the Community Profiles and MICA sites for assistance with collecting information about the health conditions and risk factors in your community.
    • Community Data Profiles is one of the community health assessment tools designed by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. It can be used as a tool for program planning in order to help you understand the health conditions and behaviors affecting your community. It provides tables that have already been created to display rates of health conditions for select population profiles (e.g., child health, infectious disease, leading causes of death, and health and preventive practices). These profiles can be viewed for the entire state or for your county.
    • MICA, Missouri Information for Community Assessment, is one of the community health assessment tools designed by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. It can be used as a tool for program planning in order to help you understand the health conditions and behaviors affecting your community. It allows the user to create tables describing the rates of health conditions (e.g., cardiovascular disease, infant mortality), preventive screening (e.g., mammograms, lead screening) and health behaviors (e.g., smoking, physical activity) for the entire state or for your county. Several tools are available as part of the MICA system that allow you to: 1) select the health condition, preventive screening or health behaviors you are interested in; and 2) customize data tables according to the year, race, age, sex and county of your interest.
