Colorectal Cancer: Basic Facts on Screening
The Missouri Screen For Life (MSFL) program is a free colorectal screening program funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and managed by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
The MSFL program provides free colorectal screening tests to men and women who are at average risk and meet age, income, residency, and medical guidelines. Residents of St. Louis City and County, and Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Warren and Washington Counties are eligible to participate. Men and women who are 50-64 years of age who meet the eligibility guidelines may qualify to participate in this program. Persons 49 years of age or younger who have a family history of polyps or colorectal cancer and meet all other eligibility guidelines may qualify to receive a free colorectal screening test.
Eligible clients of the MSFL program must complete a colorectal cancer history form to determine their risks for colorectal cancer. The test available through the MSFL program for colorectal cancer screening is a colonoscopy. A at-home Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT, stool smear) is also available upon request.
Colorectal cancer screening colonoscopy is available at Barnes Jewish Hospital and St. Louis ConnectCare. If colorectal cancer is diagnosed as a result of a colonoscopy funded by MSFL, the Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis will provide free treatment to the client.
Call the MSFL program at (314) 879-6392 to ask about eligibility guidelines or to make an appointment. Colon cancer is more easily treated when found early.
