Department Update, Glenda Miller – Division Director, Community and Public Health |
The reorganization of the Department of Health and Senior Services came into effect on August 1, 2005.
The reorganization combined several divisions: Environmental Health and Communicable Disease Prevention, Community Health, and the Center for Local Public Health Services into the Division of Community and Public Health.
The Division of Senior Services and Regulations was split into two different divisions: The Division of Senior and Disability Services and The Division of Regulation and Licensure.
The divisions are still ironing out some of the details, but the reorganization is going well.
The department has also been undergoing an extensive strategic planning process entitled MOve to Improve: Creating a Culture of Health. Thank you to the Board members who participated in the Focus Group.
The department also recently released the Healthy Missourians Initiative plan on combating obesity within the state. |

Hurricane Katrina Update, Nancy Bush – CERT |
In an effort to reach out to the citizens affected by the devastation Hurricane Katrina has caused, a shelter has been established by a wonderful partnership that includes the State of Missouri, city of St. Louis and Airport Authorities, city and federal agencies and many, many local organizations including the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Mers Goodwill and many more. We feel our first class town-like operation will provide a sense of comfort and compassion to the displaced individuals. Please take a look at the results of cooperative effort by many organizations willing to reach out to the individuals affected by this historic disaster.

Budget Update, Bret Fisher, Director of Administrative Services |
While the revenue in the state is increasing, it is still not enough to cover all expenses
Issues involved in budget challenges: Amendment 3 is seeing that more money goes to Missouri roads and highways, the School Foundation formula, money appropriated for life sciences, and bonds that were used several years ago to balance the budget are due this year.
Gap in revenue and the expenses is about 200 million.
Not yet sure how this will affect the department. |
